Rent a Bike and Experience the City Like a Local

If you are reasonably fit and ready to dive into Dutch culture, the first thing I recommend is renting a bike. Biking is by far the best way to get around Amsterdam, and there is no faster way to feel like you belong here.

The city is built for bikes, with dedicated lanes everywhere. Riding through the canals, neighbourhoods, and parks gives you a completely different perspective than walking or taking public transport. Just remember to follow the rules and watch out for locals who bike fast and confidently.

Visit the Heineken Experience

I personally enjoy beer culture, so the Heineken Experience is always on my list when people come to visit. It is a well organized tour that walks you through the history of one of the most successful beer companies in the world, which started right here in Amsterdam.

The experience ends with drinks, and one of the highlights is enjoying a beer at the rooftop bar with views over the city. Even if you are not a huge beer fan, it is a fun and surprisingly interesting stop.

Rent a Boat and Explore the Canals

One of my favourite things to do in Amsterdam is renting a boat and driving around the canals. You do not need a license for many of the smaller boats, and it is one of the most relaxed ways to experience the city.

Seeing Amsterdam from the water never gets old. It is perfect on a sunny day, especially if you bring some drinks and snacks and just cruise through the historic canal ring at your own pace. (Just beware of the one way traffic canals)

Take the Ferry to Noord and Relax at Pllek

When I want to show a different side of Amsterdam, I take visitors on the free ferry behind Central Station to Amsterdam Noord. The ferry ride itself is short but fun, and it feels like you are leaving the city even though you are only minutes away.

Once in Noord, Pllek is a great spot to sit by the water. It has a laid back, almost beach like atmosphere, especially in summer. It is a perfect place to relax, grab food, and take a break from sightseeing.

Canalside Drinks at Waterkant

Waterkant is another place I regularly take visitors. It is inspired by Surinamese cuisine and culture, and it has a very relaxed, social vibe. Sitting by the water with a drink here feels very Amsterdam to me.

It is a great stop during the day or in the evening, especially when the terrace is busy and lively.

Walk Through Albert Cuyp Market

Albert Cuyp Market is one of the most iconic street markets in Amsterdam, and it is always a hit with visitors. You can find everything from fresh food and snacks to clothes and souvenirs.

The market runs through De Pijp, which is one of my favourite neighbourhoods for food and shopping. It has a great mix of casual restaurants, cafés, and small shops, and it feels lively without being overwhelming. I usually bring friends here when we want to wander, eat well, and experience a very everyday side of the city.

Go Thrifting in the Jordaan

I always enjoy bringing visitors to the Jordaan, especially if they want to see a quieter, more lived in side of Amsterdam. Beyond the canals and cafés, it is a great area for thrifting and small independent shops.

While you are in the Jordaan, it is worth taking a small detour through De Negen Straatjes, also known as The Nine Streets. This area is packed with vintage stores, boutiques, and unique shops, and it is one of the nicest places to just wander without a plan.

Walking through the Jordaan and The Nine Streets feels slower and more local than the city center. It is perfect for an afternoon of browsing, shopping, and stopping for coffee or a drink along the way.

Why These Are Always My Go To Recommendations

These experiences are not about rushing from one attraction to another. They are about slowing down and enjoying Amsterdam the way people who live here actually do.

When friends and family leave, these are usually the moments they talk about most. Not just the sights, but how the city felt.
